Teachers, nurses get a 2 percent raise

Teachers and nurses in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District are getting a raise.

The District 196 School Board approved a new deal Monday that will add 2 percent to salary schedules for the two groups in each of the next two years. The new contract, approved on a 5-0 vote with two board members absent, also added an additional .71 percent to the top step of the longevity schedule in the first year and another .6 percent in the second year.

Longevity pay will increase by between $63 and $190 in the contract's first year, depending on the employee's level, and by $62 to $187 in the second year.

The new contract also includes a 2 percent increase in the district's health insurance contribution in the first year and a 1 percent increase in the second year; and a 2 percent increase in the contribution to dental insurance.

The agreement will be retroactive to July 1, 2013.

Under the new contract, a first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree will earn $37,342 this year. An experienced teacher with a master's degree will earn $68,194 in base salary and up to $7,183 in longevity pay.

"I'm pleased to have a settlement that will keep us competitive in attracting and retaining the best teachers," superintendent Jane Berenz said. "We are a district of choice because of the high-quality people we have working with our students."
