Rosemount High School teachers Steven Albaugh and Dr. Thomas Scott are two of 39 teachers still being considered for 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year.

Albaugh, Scott and the other 37 semifinalists were selected by a panel of community leaders in February from an initial field of 135 teachers who were nominated for this year's award. Brad Johnson, a science teacher at the School of Environmental Studies, and Lisa Swanson, a Spanish teacher at Rosemount Middle School, were among the initial nominees.

The selection panel will meet again in late March to choose approximately 10 finalists from the group of semifinalists and the 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be announced May 5 at a banquet in Minneapolis. The annual award is sponsored by Education Minnesota, the state educators' union.

"I am humbled," said Albaugh, whose nomination includes the names of more than 60 current and former students, and parents. Albaugh has been a vocal music teacher for 27 years. He was first hired in District 196 in 1995 as a choir director at Eagan High School and has been working at RHS since 2000.

Scott has been teaching social studies at RHS since 1987. He currently teaches honors American government/citizenship and a College in the Schools American democracy class. Scott is also an adjunct professor at Metropolitan State University and Saint Mary's University.
