Lydia Karlson is Rosemount Rotary's Student of the Month

Lydia Karlson is Rosemount Rotary's Student of the Month for May.

The Rotary Club of Rosemount's May 2012 Student of the Month is Rosemount High School senior Lydia Karlson, daughter of Tom and Beth Karlson.

Karlson earned a 4.0 GPA at RHS while completing six Advanced Placement courses and receiving membership in both the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. She is one of five valedictorians for the Class of 2012.

Karlson has been a choir member since kindergarten, most recently participating in concert choir and earning a superior rating in solo contest, and has played piano for 11 years. She also participates in soccer, track and cross country. She was also a member of the Quiz and Knowledge Bowl teams, contributes to Shadows, the RHS literary magazine, and has been part of the RHS newspaper staff since she was a sophomore. This year, Lydia served as one of three co-editors of the Irish Gazette student newspaper.

Outside of school, Karlson volunteers regularly for Feed My Starving Children and at the Rosemount library, where she can be founding shelving books or assisting with the summer reading program. She is also active in her church, helping with its annual garage sale and mission projects. She has gone on three mission trips to date and will be headed for another this summer in Joplin, Mo.

After graduating from RHS, Lydia plans to attend Macalester College to pursue double major in psychology and another area of study yet to be determined. Her hope is to eventually earn her doctorate in psychology and pursue a career path that advances education and learning in society.

Every month during the school year the Rosemount Rotary recognizes a student who exemplifies Rotary International's motto, Service Above Self.
