School Notes

Rosemount High School was one of six Minnesota schools recognized recently with the ACT Red Quill Award.

RHS is the only new school to receive the award, which recognizes schools that show a high level of dedication to provide students with excellent opportunities to succeed. The other five schools that were recognized all received the award last year. Several schools that were recognized last year did not make the cut this year.

Classes at RHS have been categorized using ACTs Wheel of Work and teachers have aligned courses with the ACT College Readiness Standards. The school offers an ACT preparation class and all students take the PLAN pre-ACT test in their sophomore year. A high percentage of students take the ACT in their junior or senior years.

Rosemount speech team member Sawyer Murray won a tournament championship in the novice division of humorous interpretation at the Bloomington Jefferson tournament on Feb. 19. Murray, a freshman, has finished in the top six in her event at the last four tournaments.

Two other team members finished in the top three of their categories at the tournament. Sophomore Rtusha Kulkarni earned a second place finish in the novice division of extemporaneous reading, and junior Anastasia Smith finished third in the novice division of informative speaking.

The team finished fourth among small-entry teams, its best finish of the season.

The team competes next at the Eastview Lightening Speech Tournament on Feb. 26.
