Deadline approaches for magnet, K-Plus programs

District 196 is accepting applications for enrollment in its three elementary magnet schools and Kindergarten Plus program for the 2009-10 school year. The deadline for submitting completed applications for both is Jan. 23.

Elementary magnet schools

The magnet schools are Cedar Park Elementary Science, Technology, Engineering and Math School, Diamond Path Elementary School of International Studies and Glacier Hills Elementary School of Arts and Science. The three schools opened in 2007 as part of an effort to increase racial balance in district elementary schools and to increase choices for parents. There will be a Spotlight on Schools Jan. 13 and 14 to give parents and students an opportunity to tour the three elementary magnet schools at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. both days. The district's 15 neighborhood elementary schools will offer tours by request during the week of Jan. 12. Call the school to schedule your tour. All elementary students who live in District 196 are eligible to apply for enrollment at any of the three magnet schools. Students from other districts may also apply. Enrollment is determined by a lottery system using guidelines approved by the school board and available in the magnet schools section of this web site. Bus transportation is provided for all District 196 students who live more than one-half mile from the magnet school; there is no midday kindergarten transportation for magnet school students who live outside of the school attendance area.

Applications can be completed or downloaded in the magnet schools section of the district Web site, The applications are also available at the district office, at any of the elementary magnet schools or by calling 651-423-7911. An application will also be included in the Guide to Elementary Schools that will be mailed in November to families of incoming kindergarten students. Completed applications should be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23 to: Magnet School Coordinator, Independent School District 196, 14445 Diamond Path W., Rosemount, MN 55068.
