Police chief Eric Werner takes job in Maple Grove

Eric Werner

Rosemount Police Chief Eric Werner accepted a new position this week as the police chief in Maple Grove. The Maple Grove City Council approved the hire at its May 5 meeting.

According to the Maple Grove staff memo, Werner will start his duties as chief of the department June 9. Werner replaces Dave Jess, whose retirement will go into effect May 30. He will receive a starting salary of $115,945.

In his comments to the council Maple Grove city administrator Al Madsen said Werner’s credentials are top notch and he comes highly recommended.

“We are looking forward to the leadership he will provide to the Maple Grove Police Department in his role as the new police chief,” Madsen said.

The Rosemount city council named Sgt. Bryan Burkhalter acting chief Tuesday night. Mayor Bill Droste said the city will commence its search for a replacement immediately. He said the process will mirror the one used when Werner was selected, including using a civilian panel to interview finalists.

Droste, who was surprised to learn Werner was leaving, said the departing chief has served Rosemount well.

“This is a great step up for him,” said Droste.

Werner has served as the Rosemount Police Chief since September 2012. He replaced longtime chief Gary Kalstabakken when Kalstabakken retired and took a position Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Before his stint in Rosemount, Werner served as officer for the Burnsville Police Department. He ended his 13-year tenure in Burnsville as a captain.

Overall, Werner has 26 years of law enforcement experience.

Werner holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in organizational management from Concordia University and a Master of Arts degree in police leadership and administration from the University of St. Thomas. Currently, Werner is working on his Doctorate in education in leadership at Saint Mary’s University, according to the Maple Grove staff memo.
