Michigan man came to Rosemount for sex with teen, police say

A 20-year-old Michigan man has been charged with felony criminal sexual conduct after he allegedly drove to Rosemount and had sex with an underage girl he met online.

Zachary Gene Johnson was charged Monday with four counts of criminal sexual conduct related to the incident, which came to light when the girl overdosed on medication and her mother found explicit text messages on her phone.

According to a complaint filed in the Dakota County Attorney’s office, Johnson and the girl, then 14, met online in February of 2012. They had been communicating by text message and social media ever since. Johnson came to Minnesota with friends on Aug. 16 to meet the girl.

Johnson told police he knew the girl was 14 when he met her and that she had recently turned 15.

According to the complaint, Johnson had “sexual contact” with the girl on three occasions, including one in which they had intercourse at a home in Rosemount. Police found an empty condom wrapper at the home.

Two of the criminal sexual conduct charges Johnson faces carry a maximum sentence of 15 years and fines of up to $30,000. A third has a maximum sentence of 10 years and a maximum fine of $20,000 and the fourth has a maximum sentence of three years and a maximum fine of $5,000.
