At Von Hanson's, time was right for Rosemount

Von Hanson’s sells a wide variety of meats, fresh-baked bread, deli salads and spice blends.

A dozen years or so ago Von Hanson’s Meats tried to open a store in Rosemount. It was the company’s first venture into full grocery in the old Red Owl location, but it was the wrong venture at the wrong time.

Fast forward to Saturday, and Von Hanson’s management feels better about their most recent go at business in Rosemount. Von Hanson’s Meats opened a new store in the former Kentucky Fried Chicken building on the corner of County Road 42 and Claret Avenue.

Manager Jesse Davis said he anticipated a slow start, especially since the store’s website said it would open July 1. But when staff turned on the open sign, people responded. Davis said the store was busy all weekend.

“It was great,” said Davis.

Von Hanson’s is a full service meat market that specializes in beef, pork and chicken products. Davis said Von Hanson’s offers a wide variety of quality meats and accompaniments including fresh baked bread, deli salads, sauces, spice blends and more.

Among other products, Von Hanson’s makes their own jerky, hot dogs and smoked salmon. Additionally, the store carries Boar’s Head, premium deli meats and cheeses.

While the product quality is good, Davis said customer service at Von Hanson’s is even better. He said staff strives to offer customers the best shopping experience possible by providing product expertise, cooking tips and friendly service.

The company was started in 1983 by Pete Von Bank and Dick Hanson in Apple Valley. Von Hanson’s has grown steadily and presently includes 22 locations around the Twin Cities and one in Chandler, Az.

Von Hanson’s has stores in many of the communities surrounding Rosemount that are thriving. He said the Rosemount store was opened to try to take some of the burden off of those other stores, especially the Apple Valley store.

The décor is reminiscent of an old butcher shop with brightly lit displays of meats. Davis said Von Hanson’s has hands-on ownership and that the owners helped remodel the former KFC.

Davis has worked for Von Hanson’s for 11 years. He said it’s a quality company that treats its employees well.

Von Hanson’s Meats is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
