Children's author will visit library

Mr. Munson's Itvice author Nancy Nolan will speak from 1 to 2 p.m. June 23 at the Robert Trail Library.

For 18 years, Nancy Nolan worked as an elementary school counselor. She retired last year, but the job continues to inspire her. In fact, she authored a children’s book based on her experiences.

In particular, Nolan said she found a note one day from a child at her school asking for “itvice” on how to make friends. The experience, and the spelling mistake, stuck in the back of her mind for years.

Then a few years ago, Nolan and her sister Kathryn Scadden started working together on a children’s book. Together the two created Mr. Munson’s Itvice. Nolan authored the book and Scadden provided the illustrations.

The book’s central character, Ellie, is struggling to make friends. She writes Mr. Munson a note asking for his help. Mr. Munson’s “itvice” provides a lesson on friendship. Nolan said Mr. Munson is a tall lanky character but quirky and approachable.

“He’s an adult anyone can approach,” said Nolan.

The book was released in Aug. 2013 and has been well received. The book’s success has inspired Nolan and Scadden to collaborate on at least two more Mr. Munson books. Nolan said the next book, which focuses on bullying, will be out in September.

Nolan will speak at 1 p.m. June 23 at the Robert Trail Library. She will have copies available for purchase. To learn more about Mr. Munson’s Itvice visit
