Shoe project needs a helping hand

Sally Golla loves her TOMS shoes and would like to win a trip to help distribute shoes to children in need.

Sally Golla is obsessed with TOMS shoes. She loves the way they look and the fact that they're comfortable. The Rosemount High School senior also likes that for every pair of shoes she buys, the company gives a pair away to someone in need.

"I like their whole idea," said Golla.

The company plans regular Giving Trips in which they distribute the shoes to children in countries around the world. According to their website, TOMS partners with charities and non-governmental organizations to help distribute the shoes in responsible ways. The shoes help reduce the risk of injury and infection, especially in areas where most don't have access to treatment.

To share in the fun of giving, TOMS has created its Ticket to Give program. Through the program TOMS will chose 50 people to travel on a Giving Trip and Golla hopes to be one of the lucky ones chosen.

Thousands have entered the current contest but Golla is hoping with a little help from Rosemount residents she will garner enough votes to win a place on a trip. Voting started March 4 and will run through April 12. The company will announce the 50 winners between April 22 and 28.

TOMS will sponsor several trips, and winners will be able to choose which one they attend. The location will vary depending on the date, but in the past the company has taken people to Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Argentina.

According to the company's website the shoe giving is hands on and involves a lot of work, so participants should not expect a vacation.

On her profile, Golla said that as a little girl she was taught to share and through this trip she'd like to share with others

"I want to be able to watch the expression on their face as they slip on that fresh pair of shoes," said Golla.

Golla isn't the only person with local ties trying her hand at the competition. RHS graduate Stefanie Knight also has entered the contest. Knight also loves TOMS shoes and hopes to help deliver the shoes to people in need. To vote for Knight visit
