City announces police chief finalists

The three finalists for the Rosemount Police Chief are Jewel Ericson, Rosemount police lieutenant; Michael Marben, police captain in Apple Valley; and Eric Werner, police captain in Burnsville.

The community will have the chance to meet the three finalists from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 1, at city hall.

After former chief Gary Kalstabakken retired at the end of May, the city council instructed city staff to narrow the field to three candidates. On July 18, seven candidates were interviewed by two panels. City administrator Dwight Johnson said one panel consisted of public safety personnel including current officers and the Eagan Police chief. The second panel included members of a community leaders group, city department heads and Johnson.

Johnson said panelists gave points to each candidate and city staff used them to narrow the field.

In its search for a new police chief, the city only wanted serious applications so staff implemented strict application standards.

Johnson said candidates had to have command experience to apply, which narrowed the field. The city received 11 applications and Johnson told the city council during a work session he was happy with the quality of candidates that applied.

The council will formally interview the three finalists starting at 4 p.m. Aug. 6 before the next regular council meeting.

As part of the process the council wanted to have a chance for the community to meet the finalists.

"It will be interesting to see how outgoing they are," said council member Jeff Weisensel of the finalists.

In addition to the interviews, assistant city administrator Emmy Foster said each finalist will go through an in-depth assessment process. The cost of the assessment is $2,750 per finalist.

Currently, Ericson is acting chief. Kalstabakeen retired from the department May 31 after serving the department for 14 years. He took a job with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
