Residents can design the cover of a book

The Rosemount Area Historical Society has dedicated itself to putting Rosemount's history into print. Gathering information has been a big job but is going well. Now it's time to put a cover to the book.

Historical society member Maureen Geraghty Bouchard said the organization wants to tap Rosemount's talent, so the group has decided to have a book cover design contest.

Residents can use whatever art talents they have to create a cover including drawings, old photographs, watercolors or graphic design.

"They really can use whatever they want," said Geraghty Bouchard.

The tentative title of the book is "Rosemount: From the River to Space". While the information is still being compiled Geraghty Bouchard said the book will be photo heavy and at least 300 pages.

The top three winners will receive cash prizes. The winning design will be the cover of the book. Geraghty Bouchard said they hope to get local artists to judge the contest and plan to unveil the cover during Leprechaun Days.

Cover submissions are due to the historical society by May 1. The cover design should include a front and back concept. Geraghty Bouchard said the design shouldl be vertical.

The historical society received a grant from the Hap & Jean Hanson Family Foundation to create the book. While they can't include every detail of Rosemount's past, Geraghty Bouchard said they are trying to have a representative collection of history. While the group had hoped finish the book by the end of 2011, Geraghty Bouchard said she thinks it will likely not be done until 2012.

The group is still collecting information and anyone who thinks they have valuable information can contribute to the book. In particular, the group is looking for photographs.

While there will be historical accounts in the book about the city's government, Geraghty Bouchard said they want to fill it with residents' stories.

"We think that will be more interesting," said Geraghty Bouchard.

The Rosemount Area Historical Society consists of about 20 members. The group meets the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Rosemount Community Center. For more information about the group visit and click on the link for the Rosemount Area Historical Society.
