'Chicks' hatch a plan to do good deeds

Head Chicks Sarah Gutierrez and Carrie Riesgrad Bruder

Sarah Gutierrez and Carrie Riesgrad Bruder will admit they've been blessed. That's why the stay-at-home moms feel it's their responsibility to give back. Out of that ambition they created Chicks for a Cause.

Chicks for a Cause holds monthly events that benefit a number of charities and causes throughout the Twin Cities.

Events so far have supported causes such as domestic violence prevention, cancer awareness and research and children's illnesses.

In December the non-profit will throw its weight behind helping kids in need have a merry Christmas. The proceeds from its December event will go to Toys for Tots.

The U.S. Marine Corps annually organizes Toys for Tots. Last year the Minnesota Toys for Tots campaign collected more than 350,000 toys for children in need, according to the organization's web site.

On Dec. 9 Chicks for a Cause will host a shopping event that will feature beauty products, fashion, accessories, food, home decor and more from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Rosemount Community Center.

Gutierrez said the event will feature more than 30 vendors for women or men, including Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, Avon, Mary Kay, PartyLite and more. There will be massages, food, drinks, a silent auction and door prizes Admission is free.

While the shopping event is aimed at women, Gutierrez said they didn't forget the kids. For the kids there will be a visit from Santa, carnival games, crafts, face painting and treats. A couple of Marines will be on hand to talk with kids as well.

"We wanted to make it an event where moms can shop and kids can play," said Guiterrez.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a Toy. Those who do will receive discounts from the vendors.

The organization is in the process of becoming a 501(c) 3 organization. The group of five women works with local businesses and vendors to host charity vendor events and silent auctions to provide monetary donations and awareness to charitable causes.

"So far our events have been really successful," said Guiterrez.

Founded in May, the group is led by Head Chick 1 Sarah Gutierrez and Head Chick 2 Carrie Riesgrad Bruder. While based in Rosemount the group will hold its events all over the metro area.
