Softball: Proving that they belong

Early-season rankings typically don't mean much.

Longtime Rosemount softball coach Jim Matheson knows that.

When the Irish were ranked No. 7 in the preseason coaches' poll, it was a nice honor, especially for a team that wasn't sure how its pitching would develop.

Eagan, and its all-state pitcher Sara Moulton was ranked No. 1 to start the year.

The two teams met on Monday and proved the rankings didn't mean much.

The Irish beat Eagan 1-0, scoring the first run Moulton has allowed this season.

"She's as good a pitcher as I've seen in the last five years or longer," Matheson said. "One of our parents that coaches kids in the summer said it's the first time Rosemount has won a game pitched by Moulton since she was 10 years old. That was a big game."
