Healthy population of birds awaits turkey hunters

Minnesota's spring wild turkey season begins April 18 with its first of eight five-day sessions.

Minnesota's daily hunting hours have been extended until sunset. A total of 33,976 permits were available for the spring hunt.

Last spring, a total of 8,241 turkeys were registered, up slightly from 7,800 in 2005. In 2006, the hunter success rate was almost 30 percent. Success was highest (39 percent) last year in the first two time periods.

Hunters will be limited to a bag limit of one bearded turkey per license

Something new this year will be that hunting hours extended until sunset daily; no minimum age to apply for a turkey license but a parent or guardian must accompany juveniles under age 14; others, see regulations.
