Rosemount will once again be well-represented at next weekend's Class 2A state cross country meet.
The Irish boys advanced by dominating the team race, winning the Section 3AA championship by placing five runners in the top 17 at Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley. The girls team will be represented by Hannah Grim, who qualified for her fourth straight state meet with a ninth-place finish.
The post-race awards ceremony inside the Skoglund Center gym has been a part of the state meet routine for the Rosemount boys cross country team over the last six years.
The last three times the Irish have competed as a team at St. Olaf College – in 2006, 2007 and 2010 – they have found their way onto the podium after finishing in the top three. The fifth-ranked Irish ran well Saturday, but missed another trip to the award ceremony by a matter of seconds as they placed fourth out of 16 teams in the Class 2A State Championships in Northfield.
It looks like the team race at Saturday's Class 2A State boys cross country meet may wind up being a battle for second.
Stillwater has been ranked first throughout the season and the Ponies did nothing to make anyone believe otherwise at last week's Section 4AA Championships.
Rosemount will once again send a large group to the Class 2A State cross country meet next Saturday.
The Irish boys, ranked second in the state, defended their section title 58-66 over runner-up Burnsville and Liz Evenocheck and Hannah Grim snuck into the top 10 in the girls race to qualify for state as individuals at Wednesday afternoon's Section 3AA Championships at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights.
There were record turnouts for all events at Friday's 15th annual Rosemount High School alumni cross country meet.
All told, more than 160 current Rosemount High School runners, former runners and possible future runners turned out for the events. There were 47 competitors in the women's race, 85 in the men's and 29 in the kids' race.
The Irish cap off their season Saturday with another showing at the Class 2A Cross Country State Championships at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Class 2A boys race is schedule to get
underway at 1 p.m.
