It’s all in your head
My brother is four years younger then I am. We had dinner recently and as the conversation drifted to Vietnam as a vacation spot, he said no man his age will ever forget their draft number.

Balancing tough and toasty-warm
Back in the early days of this fall weather season, which I think started in earnest somewhere around Aug. 3, I decided I would tough it out as long as I could.

Disco dunce
Dancing with the Stars, the television program that pairs professional dancers with celebrities, athletes, even politicians, was never one of my must-sees.

Lifelong learning
Religion has me stumped. It wasn’t always so. As a child, I attended Catholic school, went to Mass every Sunday with my family and accepted everything with faith. Just as the nuns said. “Who made you?” the Baltimore Catechism asked. “God made me,” my classmates and I answered.

Gilding the lily
Do you ever wonder what people will say about you when you’re gone? I do. Especially, when I attend a funeral and eulogists wax effusively about the mega-qualities of the deceased.

Only rock ’n roll, but I liked it
I was born in 1974, so many of my formative years were spent in the 1980s. It was a confusing time. Women wore their hair high enough to take down passing aircraft, and it was considered acceptable — sexy even — for certain men to wear make-up and dress in stretchy, brightly-colored pants.

Hail Mary
People have asked how my brother-in-law, Jeff, enjoyed his visit last weekend. In case you’ve forgotten, my husband’s younger sibling finally accepted the invitation to visit that we’ve extended often over the past 19 years.

Making the argument for TV
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences held its 61st Emmy Awards ceremony Sunday. And while for most of America the night was little more than 15 straight hours of mindless entertainment and dance numbers — or what I like to call a typical Friday night — for the people who took part it was something much more.

Mom also said, ‘Open mouth, insert foot’
It seems a week can’t go by without someone saying, “Nothing surprises me anymore.” Perhaps, you’ve uttered the words yourself.

The change of seasons is here
The seasons are changing.
I don’t mean summer into fall. Nobody really cares about that except for people who get way too excited about watching leaves die a vibrant, colorful death.

They follow the way of the wheels
By now, anyone who is a regular reader of this column should know I like to ride my bike. I ride it long distances. I ride it up mountains. I ride despite impolite drivers who yell at me and call me names. Or sometimes because of them.

Up next: 24-hour tractor cam
I don't claim to know a lot about sports. In fact, I regularly claim to know nearly nothing about any sports that don't involve riding bicycles absurd distances or playing college basketball.

We who are about to drive ...
I imagine the ancient Romans felt something like this. Sitting in their coliseums as gladiators fought to the death, I suspect they experienced many of the same emotions I had as I sat in the Dakota County Fair grandstand Friday night and watched demolition derby drivers try to bash each other into oblivion.

This masked mammal is no Kimo Sabe
Last month, my neighbor called to tell me there was a raccoon walking across her front yard. Her husband was off fishing and she didn’t know what to do.

Let the sun shine
A test last fall showed I’ve lost some bone density, so my doctor wanted to check my vitamin D level, too. I was shocked when the nurse phoned a few days later and said the number was so dangerously low, I could have gotten adult rickets.
