State cuts could hurt county budget
It is looking bad, and it is probably going to get worse. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s proposal to balance the state’s budget would have significant impact on Dakota County, finance director Matt Smith told the Dakota County Board of Commissioners Tuesday. County board appoints chief deputy as interim sheriff 
In the end there was no surprise appointment.
At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners, on a unanimous vote, appointed Dakota County Chief Deputy Dave Bellows sheriff, replacing Don Gudmundson, whose resignation is effective Sunday.

County sheriff will step down early 
Don Gudmundson plans to leave earlier than expected.
The Dakota County Sheriff announced last September he would not seek a fifth term, choosing to retire at the end of 2010, but Gudmundson announced in a memo to the Dakota County Board of Commissioners last week he plans to leave office earlier – by the end of February.

Foreclosures were down in 2009 
The number of home foreclosures showed a significant decrease in Dakota County in 2009. It is the first decrease in numbers since 2000, according to information released this week by the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office.
Whether that downward trend will continue in 2010 is not known. Through the first 22 days of January, the sheriff’s office had scheduled 184 sales, which does not appear to be encouraging.

A new name for a changing world 
After 40 years of service the Community Action Council has a new name. In January the community service organization became 360 Communities. It will go under the new moniker from here on out.

Bellows will run for county sheriff

County tax levy won’t change for 2010

On Tuesday, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners set the 2010 preliminary tax levy at $128,375,073, the same figures as the final 2009 county levy.
