Legion will honor Rosemount fire, police and 911 personnel

This year the American Legion will celebrate its 94th birthday. As the group has done in the past the Rosemount American Legion Post 65 will celebrate by recognizing members of the organization and by honoring those in the community that serve us all, including a police officer, firefighter and dispatcher of the year.

“We think the people that serve this community deserve to be honored,” said Bob Racette, Post 65 Commander.

Post 65 will host its annual celebration starting at 5:30 p.m. March 23 at 14590 Burma Ave. Among the awards that will be handed out are Continuous Membership awards, Firefighter of the Year, Police Officer of the Year, Dispatcher of the Year, Legionnaire of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Racette said two legion members will be honored for 60 years in the club.

The national organization will turn 94 years old this year. The Rosemount Post will celebrate 93 years. Post 65 was chartered in 1920. Racette said their basic function is to serve veterans and the community.

Post 65 serves the community through donations and events. Racette said he feels honoring police, fire and dispatch is a valuable way to give back to those who serve everyone in the community. Last year, the Rosemount American Legion donated $89,000 to the community.

The Rosemount post has recognized police and firefighter of the year since 1993. In 2009 the Legion also started honoring the Dakota Communication Center Dispatch Operator of the year. Each award recipient is chosen by their peers.

“All we do is throw the party,” said Racette.

The event will include a pasta dinner and the program. This year mayor Bill Droste will be the keynote speaker. The winners will be announced during the ceremony.
