Easter comes early this year, which means there may be snow on the ground for the annual Rosemount Lions Club Egg Hunt. But unless there’s a lot of it falling from the sky, the show will go on.
The egg hunt will start promptly at 10 a.m. March 23 at the Ames Soccer Complex on the Dakota County Technical College campus. Parks supervisor Lisa Maurer said residents should show up early or they may leave disappointed.
“It’s a lot of fun but it’s a short event,” said Maurer.
Donations through the Rosemount Lions Club make it possible for the parks and recreation department to give out 6,000 filled eggs and more than 10,000 pieces of candy.
To ensure fun for everyone, children will be divided into three age groups. Each area will be filled with 2,000 eggs and extra pieces of candy. The age divisions will be 1- to 3 year olds, 4- to 6 year olds and 7- to 10 year olds.
Maurer encouraged kids to bring a bag or basket to hold treats. A bunny will visit after the egg hunt, so parents should bring cameras to get photographs. Additionally, a golden egg will be hidden for each age group and can be turned in for a special prize
For the last several years, Rosemount resident Joe Walsh and his mother have donated money to give each child a coloring activity book. Walsh, who is a past city council member, said it was a long-ago tradition that he decided should be brought back. They handed out the books last year, and they hope to do so again this year if the weather cooperates.
“It’s just part of our family contribution to the community,” said Walsh.
The event is free, and non-perishable food donations will be accepted for the 360 Communities Rosemount Family Resource Center. The center provides a food shelf for those in need and serves more than 500 people each month.
In case of inclement weather, the egg hunt will be held the following Saturday, March 30. Call the city’s information line at 651-322-6020 and select 6 for event cancellations and event make up information.
