Rosemount United Methodist Church Zone 56 group members made 300 sandwiches. The group consists of kids in the fifth and sixth grades.

Helping people is something kids in the fifth and sixth grades are eager to do. Some of them will say doing so is better than some of their favorite things.

“It’s fun helping people. It’s more worth it than playing Xbox,” said Noah Glitto.

Glitto and 20 other fifth- and sixth graders got together Saturday morning at Rosemount United Methodist Church to make sandwiches for homeless and hungry people in Dakota County.

The kids all belong to Zone 56, a ministry for fifth- and sixth graders at Rosemount UMC. The group usually meets on Wednesday evenings.

Pastor Karen Kleckner said kids in the tween years start to understand the needs of others and are eager to help. So she said she tries to plan activities to meet that enthusiasm.

“This age kids want to serve. They are eager to help people and excited to do it,” said Kleckner.

On Saturday the kids created assembly lines and built 300 sandwiches. The sandwiches consisted of two pieces of bread, two pieces of meat and one slice of cheese.

Fifth grader Abbie Ostrum said she enjoyed doing something with her friends that helped other people. She explained that each person receives two sandwiches, one to eat immediately and one for later.

Xavier Sell said he thinks it would be hard to just have two sandwiches a day. Through their effort Saturday morning Sell said they would help more than 150 people.
