Boys swimming and diving: Hatlen wins three against SouthSection 3AA prelims begin Wednesday in Prior Lake

Senior Sheldon Hatlen was part of three of Rosemount’s four first-place finishes during a 99-85 loss to Lakeville South in the final meet of the regular season last Tuesday at Rosemount Middle School.
“Lakeville South is a strong team. We had some good races against them,”?said Rosemount coach Tami Carlson, whose team finished 6-3 in the conference. “The boys have been working extremely hard all season to do well at sections and to qualify for state. They have some pretty high goals and their work ethic throughout the season definitely shows their determination.”
Hatlen opened last Tuesday’s meet by winning the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.46 seconds. He followed that by claiming victory in the 100 freestyle in 47.70.
Two events later, Hatlen joined Andrew Urness, Sam Kendall and Kyle Bodine for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The same foursome combined to place second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Daniel Monaghan continued his streak of first-place finish in the one-meter dive with a score of 262 points.
The Irish opened the meet with a pair of runner-up finishes. Frank Haney, Sam Stern, Ian Gardiner and Peterson combined on a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay and Urness followed that up with a second-place swim in the 200 freestyle.
Noah Peterson added a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle and Haney was second in the 200 backstroke.
The Irish have a 14-day layoff before competing in the Section 3AA prelims next Wednesday at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake. The finals are next Thursday and Friday in Prior Lake and the winners and swimmers who meet qualifying standards will move on to the Class 3A state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center Feb. 28-March 2.
