The Rosemount wrestling team is building up quite a bit of momentum heading into next Friday’s Section 3AAA team tournament.
The Irish put together their second straight 5-0 week last week and have now won 16 of their last 17 dual matches since the start of the new year. After defeating Eden Prairie (41-15) and Wayzata (36-22) fairly handily last Thursday at the Wayzata Triangular, the Irish continued their winning streak against some tough competition Saturday at the Blaine Tournament.
They advanced to the finals of the eight-team tournament with what coach Brett Larson called their “biggest win of the year,” defeating 10th-ranked Coon Rapids 31-30 on criteria by winning 8 of 14 matches. Adam Hedin, Kwame Owusu, Grant Jackson and Kouta Sugii won decisions. Dan Rosa, Sam Moeller and Craig Syzmanski scored major decisions and Payton Otterdahl earned a pin.
The Irish knocked off Blaine 42-33 in the opening round, and wrapped up the tournament title with a 39-30 victory over Detroit Lakes.
Rosa, Hedin, Owusu, Sugii, Moeller, Syzmanski and Otterdahl once again picked up victories against Detroit Lakes, and freshman Rueben Cephas stepped into the lineup and supplied a crucial pin.
Moeller finished the week with a record of 5-0, improving his overall mark to 30-5. He’s tied for the team lead in victories with Rosa, who went 4-1 last week to up his record to 30-3. Otterdahl (27-8), Sugii (19-11) and Hedin (9-2) all went 4-1 last week and Owusu (21-14) went 3-0.
The Irish close out the regular season tonight with a Parents Night dual meet against Eagan at Irish Gym.
