Two weekends, two chances for family fun

As winter drags on, a couple of local events hope to bring people from the brink of the doldrums. St. Joseph Church will host its Family Fun Night Feb. 1 and the Rosemount Parks and Recreation Department will host its Family Fun Fest Feb. 8.

Family Fun Night

St. Joseph Church and School will host Family Fun Night with Prizes and Meatballs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 1 at the church. Proceeds from the event will raise money for the school.

The event will feature a pasta dinner, silent auction, raffle, Bingo, games for children and a DJ. Auction items include park hopper passes to Disney World, Timberwolves tickets, tutor services and more.

“It’s a chance to get out with your family to have fun,” said Cris Meaden, one of the event’s planners.

The event is open to members of the community.

Family Fun Night will take over the whole church. Throughout the evening music will be provided by a DJ in the gym with interactive games for children of all ages. Parents can join in the fun or just relax while the children work out their energy. Face painting and a play room with mats and balloons will be available and limited to toddlers and preschoolers. Upstairs in the social hall, attendees can try their chance at Bingo to win a prize.

The pasta dinner will include red sauce, a white sauce or no sauce options. The meal includes the pasta, a drink and dessert. Cost for dinner is $7 for adults and $5 for children age 3 to 12. Children under age 2 eat free. There is a $25 cap for families.

Family Fun Fest

The city’s event is free and will feature music from the Alpha Bits, carnival games, jumpers and an hour of free ice skating.

The Family Fun Festival will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rosemount Community Center. Ice skating will be available from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Those wanting to skate must provide their own skates.

The free and popular event usually draws between 300 and 400 people to the community center. This is the sixth year the Rosemount Park and Recreation Department has put on the Family Fun Festival. Parks supervisor Lisa Maurer said the event is especially fun for younger children.

Each child will receive a goody bag and there will be light refreshments available.

Maurer said the parks and recreation department is able to keep the event free because of a generous group of volunteers who help put it on. Originally the group volunteered as a Girl Scout troop but even though most of them aren’t involved with Girl Scouts anymore they still come back year after year.
