Rosemount crowned three individual champions and finished fourth as a team with 144 ½ points Saturday at the Eastview Lightning Invitational in Apple Valley.
Shakopee defeated Faribault 189-168 for the team title. Host Eastview was third with 147 points and the Irish were right behind despite entering wrestlers at 11 of 14 weights.
“It was a very competitive and balanced tournament,” Rosemount coach Brett Larson said. “Fourth was very good considering the weight classes we didn’t fill.”
Payton Otterdahl, Sam Moeller and Dan Rosa all won championships for the Irish. Otterdahl and Moeller made it look easy, with Otterdahl (19-6) winning with three straight pins and Moeller (21-4) scoring a technical fall, a 5-0 decision and a pin in the finals.
Rosa (23-2) advanced with a pin and a 6-2 decision at 126 pounds before rallying to defeat fifth-ranked Nick O’Brien of Wayzata 12-10 in overtime.
“It was a very gutsy performance and he battled back from a five-point deficit twice,” Larson said.
Jake Baker (18-6) just missed a fourth Irish title, dropping the 113-pound championship, 3-2. Craig Syzmanski added a third-place finish, his best showing of the season, Grant Jackson (13-9) was fourth and Kwame Owusu came in fifth (17-12).
The Irish are back at Irish Gym tomorrow night for Fan Appreciation Night against East Ridge and Farmington. Matches begin at 5 o’clock.
