Boys swimming and diving: Irish sink Apple Valley
Rosemount won five straight events to build a 60-33 lead FridayBy: Matt Steichen, Rosemount Town Pages
Rosemount’s Andrew Urness, Sam Kendall and Kyle Bodine finished 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle and the Irish led the rest of the way in a 95-85 South Suburban Conference dual win over Apple Valley Friday night at the Valley Middle School pool.
The sweep put the visitors up 19-11 after two events. It ended up being the first of five first-place finishes that stretched the Irish advantage to 60-33 by the meet’s halfway point. During that run Noah Peterson won the 200 individual medley, Shelton Hatlen won the 50 freestyle, Daniel Monaghan and Gareth Estabrook pulled away for a 1-2 finish in the 1-meter dive and Ian Gardiner claimed a narrow victory in the 100 butterfly.
Hatlen, Gardiner, Kyle Bodine and Scott Maki later teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay by just over half a second over Rosemount’s runner-up foursome of Urness, Peterson, John Drew and Shane Devitt.
Myles Higgs, Trevor Gunderson and Maki added a 1-2-3 showing in the 500 freestyle and Matt Weber topped the field in the 100 breaststroke. That was one of three events swum as exhibitions after the Irish built a 95-60 lead.
The Rosemount swimmers faced Lakeville North Tuesday and are back in the pool next Tuesday against Eastview at Falcon Ridge Middle School.
