Eighteenth-ranked Apple Valley put 11 more shots on goal and netted a pair of power-play scores, but a little extra effort helped Rosemount come away with a 4-3 upset of the Eagles last Thursday at Apple Valley Sports Arena.
“It was a big win. It is a great example of what this team can accomplish when they work hard. It is a simple formula with our team. When we work very hard we are a difficult team to play against,” Rosemount coach Josh Hoekstra said. “You cannot cut corners in hockey. The sport is set up to separate those who have a will and desire to compete on a night in, night out basis — nothing more to it. I love our team when we decide to compete.”
The Irish (5-12-1) fell behind 1-0 after a period, but Kendra Goodrich tied the score with her first goal (assist from Shaniah Anderson) 1:27 into the second. The Eagles moved back ahead less than three minutes later, but Goodrich once again provided an answer with her second tally to tie the score at 2-2 heading into the third. Anderson and Natalie Deeg assisted.
“Kendra Goodrich had a monstrous game and was the best player on the ice,” Hoekstra said.
The score stayed knotted up over the first 10 minutes of the third before Kristen Reuter knocked in the game-winner unassisted at 10:06. Ashlee Humble added an empty-netter in the final minute.
Lauren Topor allowed Apple Valley’s second power-play goal in the closing seconds, but finished with 29 saves to earn the win. She was fronted by a group of defenders – Deeg, Hannah Esselmann, Hannah Enright, Andrea Hughes and Allison Karmann – who coach Hoekstra said played “fantastic”, as well.
Jennifer Thomsen, Erica Power and Emily Everson each had goals for Apple Valley, which outshot the Irish, 32-21. The Eagles now have a record of 11-8.
The Irish’s tough schedule continues tonight as they take on 14th-ranked Bloomington Jefferson at Bloomington Ice Garden. They are back home Saturday afternoon against 15th-ranked Lakeville South.
