The SBI Boot Hockey Tournament started as a creative way for a softball team to make some money, but has turned into an animal all of its own. This year, organizers will bring the winter fun to Rosemount.

In the past the tournament has been held as part the Apple Valley Mid-Winter Fest, but this year organizers decided to move the event. In Rosemount, organizer Matt Jackson said he expects this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever. The SBI Boot Hockey Tournament will be held Feb. 2.

Teams of four will play each other for boot hockey glory. Each team must furnish its own goalie. Goalies can wear full gear. Teams will play with an official street hockey ball. Only broomball shoes or boots are allowed.

Jackson said boot hockey is a growing sport. The game is played with hockey rules but instead of skates players were boots. Balls take the place of pucks. He said anyone can play it, which is part of the fun.

This is the third year SBI has held the tournament. The tournament started with 20 teams. Jackson said they will accept up to 32 teams this year. Teams can consist of all men, all women or a combination.

Each team is guaranteed three games in pool play and then it will be single elimination. There will be four rinks running throughout the day.

While it’s a busy day, Jackson said the tournament is a lot of fun. This year Las Tortillas will provide a cash beer garden and concession stand at the event. Jackson said he was glad to partner with a local business to make the event bigger and better.

“We want this to be a fun community event,” said Jackson.

Jackson will take registration through Jan. 23. A limited number of teams will be accepted so Jackson recommended those wanting to play sign up early. Team entry is $99.
