County warns it won’t tolerate dumping

Illegal dumping at the University of Minnesota Rosemount Research Center will not be tolerated, says a letter addressed to U of M President Kenneth H. Keller and approved by Dakota County commissioners on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

The letter was prompted by the disclosure last week that the research center had allowed the city of Minneapolis to dump soil containing old landfill debris at a site leased by the Minneapolis Police Bomb Squad. The bomb squad was constructing an earthen berm to muffle the sound of detonations at the site.

Dumping of the debris-laden material violated the county’s solid waste ordinance, said Donna Anderson, public health director.

Fay Thompson, assistant director of environmental health and safety at the university, said the berm was “intended to be an improvement to the land.” She expressed apologies to the county and to the city of Rosemount, adding that the dumping incident should not have occurred.

She said the university has asked the Minneapolis Police Department to remove all trash material from research center land. The material, hauled from a Minneapolis Park Board excavation project, apparently came from a demolition debris landfill that was more than 50 years old.

RHS swim team waves by Hudson

For the Rosemount Irish swimmers, the Tuesday, Dec. 29 meet against Hudson was a warmup into the conference season. The Irish defeated the Hudson, Wis., team 97-73.

A highlight of the meet was senior John Pryor’s fast time in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Freshman Tim Sjobeck had the fastest split for 100 yards in the 400-yard freestyle. He took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.5.

First place went to the 200-yard medley relay of Jon Bonneville, Matt Gooding, Pryor and Sjobeck.

Senior Bonneville captured first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:09. Bonneville has all-state honors in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle.

In diving action, junior Rob Fischer collected first in one-meter diving with 164 points, 70 points over the second-place finisher. Head coach Jim Ertl said Fischer is the top returning diver from section 3….

Sophomore Eric Haseman gathered two first, one in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 5:37.2....

Junior Gooding placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, claiming a time of 1:01.4.

Greif Bros. plant opens at Rosemount

Another new Rosemount industry, Greif Brothers Cooperage Company, Norco Division, began production, December 15, 1962.

Greif, with home offices in Delaware, Ohio, has a new one-story plant, occupying 84,000 square feet, at the east edge of Rosemount, located in the village.

They converted paper into multi-wall bags, manufacturing heavy industrial shipping containers. This is flexible packaging, according to Ray Anderson, sales manager from Watertown, Minnesota, formerly of south Minneapolis.

The plant superintendent at Rosemount is Ray Dorman, originally from Arkansas. Both men have a wide background in multi-wall bag manufacturing.

The Rosemount operations are directed by A.H. Snipers, vice president, Norco Division, St. Paul.

Rosemount to vote on school issue January 8

Voters in the Rosemount school district will go to the polls January 8 to vote on whether or not to pass on a $1,700,000 bond issue for the prepose of constructing a new high school.

After the growth in school enrollment and problems of the future, the school board after examination of present growth of the school decided to call for such a bond issue.

A report by a local citizens committee recommended construction of a new senior high school, necessary athletic fields and improvement of the school lunch facilities at the existing secondary school.

If the bond issue is approved by voters, the present high school building will be converted to a junior high school with provisions for the addition of an adequate lunch room.

Doyle loses airplane case against U.S.

Charles P. Doyle of Rosemount, who sought an airplane of $10,000 from the government, lost in a decision Wednesday set by Federal Judge Gunnar H. Nordbye....

The action in the case was brought by Doyle, a Northwest airlines pilot and aviation enthusiast, who claimed he was promised a C45 transport plane in exchange for his P40 fighter plane of World War II vintage.

Doyle charged if he could not get the plane he wanted, he should receive $5,000, plus another $5,000 for loss of the use of the C45.

It was contended by Doyle, he had entered into a contract with the air force for exchange of the two planes at the Wright-Patterson air force base museum near Dayton, Ohio. The government maintained there never was such a contract.

Baby Doyle wins New Year prize

Mr. and Mrs. John Doyle of Rosemount were the first parents of this community to claim the prize for the first baby born in 1938.

A daughter, weighing six and a half pounds, was born to them at 8:30 Monday morning and the news was telephoned to the Tribune as fast as the wires could carry the message. The darkhaired Miss arrived at the home of the proud father’s brother and sister-in-law. Postmaster and Mrs. Edwin Doyle at Rosemount, Dr. M.A. Flores of Rosemount, being the physician in charge and Mrs. Edwin Doyle, the nurse.

The 1938 baby models were about the same as last year.

Tibbetts, Boxer making record

Winning 25 consecutive boxing bouts, Bud Tibbetts, former Rosemount boy, is being acclaimed the champion welterweight amateur boxer in the Twin Cities, and one sports writer calls him the best in the northwest.

The 145-pound 20-year-old boxer is trained by Mike Gibbons, former world champion. Bud does his training at the Gibbons gym in the Hamm building, St. Paul, where he has fought several battles.

Bud, a son of the late Walter Tibbetts, former proprietor of a recreation parlor at Rosemount, will box again next Tuesday night, but his opponent has not yet been announced. He is staying at the Henry McHugh home, Farmington.
