Rosemount fell behind by 10 points early in the first half before rallying for a 55-51 road win last Thursday against Farmington at Tiger Gym.
After the slow start, the Irish got more aggressive on offense (season-high 20 of 32 from the free-throw line) while also committing a season-low 10 turnovers. Kaylie Hanson’s free throws with 2.7 seconds left clinched the team’s second win in four tries this season.
“A huge part of winning is learning how to win, especially when you don’t play your best, and we did that against Farmington. Our bench was fantastic again with the energy and communication and our defensive intensity really picked up in the second half. Now we just need to bring that same intensity for 36 minutes and not 18,” said Rosemount coach Chris Orr, whose team closed to within 25-23 at the break. “Our shooting struggles continued, but we did a much better job of taking care of the basketball and attacking the rim.”
Hannah Grim matched her season average with a team-high 18 points. She was just 6 of 20 from the field, but converted on 6 of 9 from the charity stripe. Ellie Vraa joined her in double figures with 11 points and nine rebounds and helped hold Farmington guard Sofia Chadwick in check with solid defensive play in the second half.
“She was very aggressive in taking it to the rim, pushing the ball up the court and she did an excellent job on defense against their point guard in the second half,” Orr said. “She can be a very good lock down defender.”
Kalley McMenomy contributed to the Irish’s strong bench play with nine points and Meghan Schuster dropped in six points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Irish have three straight home games this week, starting with a non-conference date with Shakopee on Tuesday. Bloomington Jefferson comes to Irish Gym for a South Suburban Conference opener tonight and Park of Cottage Grove comes to town on Saturday.
Thursday is Pack the Gym Night. Fans are asked to wear gold and prizes will be given out.
Saturday is RAAAA Traveling Basketball Night. All RAAA traveling girls players who wear their jerseys will get free admission.
