Students honored in District 917

The District 917 Board of Education recently honored its students of the quarter.

Among the local winners were: Steve Kromschroeder, Rosemount, distributive education; Sally Bigoness, Rosemount, business and office division; Donan Muench, Apple Valley, trade and industrial studies; Dave Goodwill, Inver Grove Heights, transportation division; and Kristin White, Burnsville, Dakota County Vocational Center.

In addition, two teachers received awards, Lori Williams, Rosemount, was named teacher of the quarter at Dakota County Area Vocational Technical Institute, and Sharon Bassett, Apple Valley, was named special education teacher of the quarter in Intermediate School District 917.

RHS choir will perform in Utah

The Rosemount High School choir, under the direction of Steve Boehlke, has been selected to participate in the 1988 Choral Festival at Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, Utah, April 27-30, 1988.

Only three other choirs nationwide are invited to the festival sponsored by the American Institute for Foreign Study. A special highlight of the festival will be a practice session with the Mormom Tabernacle Choir.

The group of approximately 65 students will sponsor fundraisers this year to raise money to defray the trip’s expenses.

District 196 school closing procedure outlined

In the event of the threat or presence of severe weather, the District 196 director of transportation will check conditions for travel between 4 and 5:30 a.m.

Then the director of transportation and director of support services will review weather conditions and make a recommendation to the superintendent who will authorize one of the following options: School will open late, all classes, including community education activities, will be canceled for the entire day.

If changes are made in the school schedule, the information will be promptly telephoned to radio stations. School closing information will also be available on the District 196 information line.

Villages to vote Dec. 4

The election for various village officers which will take place on Dec. 4, will be confined mainly to incumbent office-holders with several exceptions. In addition to filling the expiring incumbent’s positions, there will also be special issue up-for-decision in Lakeville….

In Rosemount, P.F. Finnegan, incumbent, will be opposed by T. S. Mohr for the three-year term as trustee, Eugene Duff, incumbent for clerk, and Matthew Huerta and Melvin Pulley for justice. There were no fillings for constable.

Voting will be from noon until 8 p.m. at the village fire hall.

$1.7 million bond issue soon for Rosemount area

In a special meeting of the school board of District 196, Rosemount, on Nov. 26, it was decided to follow a previously submitted recommendation of the study committee and call for a bond issue of $1,700,000.

The issue will be submitted to residents of the school district on Jan. 8, 1963, for the anticipated cost of construction of a new senior high school with a seating capacity of 600 pupils, and a lunchroom added to the present junior-senior high school.

The funds provided by the bond issue will also follow for acquisition and payment for 43 acres of land immediately north of the present school which will be used for the site of the new school and provide physical education facilities.

A publicity committee which will provide weekly information to the various papers serving the area will be comprised of two members from the study committee, Rollin Dennistoun and Mrs. George Ward; two members from the P.T.A.; Mrs. Alfred Shadduck and Mrs. Joseph Krzisnik; and two members from the school board, H.C. Crow and Arthur J. Volkert.

County property values raised

Dakota County Assessor Tom Mallery said this week the state tax department has placed valuation increases on residential property in parts of Dakota County.

The values were not raised in northern Dakota County because it was hit hard by value increases in the last two years. The valuation increases have been placed in Farmington and Rosemount village and Empire, Lakeville and Lebanon townships on structures and in some cases land.

The state has raised values in the following: Farmington, an increase of 10 percent on residential structures; Rosemount, increase of 10 percent on residential structures.

Split shifts probable for ’64 at Rosemount

An item of interest that appeared in the Rosemount Blu ‘N Gold school paper concerning split shifts for the high school is as follows:

In 1964, Rosemount High School will have to go on split shifts.

How long this will continue will depend on the results on a bond issue tentatively scheduled to be put to a vote Jan. 8.

If passed, the bond will be used to pay for a multiple-story senior high school to be built on the Motz’ property. It will accommodate 600 students and will be capable of being expanded to 1,500 capacity.

The present junior-senior high building, with an enrollment of 527, has a capacity of 600. The expected enrollment next year is 635.

By ’67-68 it will be over 1,000.

This rapid growth is making the present facilities inadequate. The gymnasium, for instance, must serve as a gym for junior and senior high basketball boys’ and girls’ physical education, GARA, pep club and pep fests, an auditorium for convocations and programs and as a lunchroom.

Delaney farmhouse burns

Fire of unknown origin destroyed the Steve Delaney 8-room farmhouse two and half miles west of Rosemount, Wednesday night of this week.

The fire stated about 8:15 and was discovered by August Ratzlaff who was passing the farm.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Members of the family were visiting at the home of Mr. Delaney’s mother near Hastings.

The fire started upstairs over the kitchen and had gained considerable headway before it was discovered. Chief Ed McDonald Rosemount Fire department responded to the call and saved the other buildings.

The house is covered by insurance.

Rosemount drops thrilling opener; score 29 to 26

Rosemount opened its cage season by dropping a hard-fought battle to St. Paul Park. It was a fast, clean game from beginning to end. The blue and gold started the scoring, but the Park soon retaliated.

There was no choice when the whistle ended the first half, with the Park leading by a margin of 13-12. The third quarter ended with the score of 17 all.

It was the last quarter that brought the fans to the feet.

Treuis and Toombs led the scoring for Rosemount with eight and nine points, respectively.

Jackson and Turan looked best for the Park tallying 15 and nine points, respectively.

The game was featured by beautiful long shots by Treuis, Toombs, Tuman and Jackson. Rosemount suffered a heavy loss when Corrigan, the Rosemount center was ejected from the game on his limit of personal fouls.

Scott was called upon then and played a fine defensive game. Compton and O’Leary, the midget forwards of Rosemount, played a skillful game. Compton counting five points, while O’Leary showed up well on defense, as well as scoring one basket.

Foster Transberg of Farmington made several calls in this vicinity Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wachter and sons, were Sunday visitors at the Fred Wachter home at Pine Bend.

Rev. and Mrs. Nennaber and family were dinner guests on Thanksgiving day at the Henry Harrisberger home.

Mrs. F. Ohmann, and her mother, Mrs. E. Volkert were Friday afternoon visitors at the John Artwohl home.

Mrs. Carl Wachter made a shopping trip to St. Paul Tuesday. Also Mrs. F. Ohmann and her mother Mrs. E. Volkert.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wachter and family enjoyed their Thanksgiving turkey dinner at the Henry Wachter home in St. Paul.

Joseph F. Ruhr, student at the University of Minnesota, spent Thanksgiving at his home here.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ryan and sons, Jack and Donald, spent their Thanksgiving day and evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Connelly on Thursday of last week.

Kenneth Warren and Clarence Hogan were city visitors Thursday evening.

Rosemount is improving Fredrick Genz started a shoe repair shop at the old Dennis Hogan place. This is something that was needed in Rosemount. Mr. Genz is an old country shoemaker, and therefore is able to do good work. Bring in your old shoes and give him a good start.
