Ten Allegro students make state honor choir

Allegro Choral Academy had 10 students make the Minnesota American Choral Directors Association Honor Choir. It’s the most the non-profit has had, but director Greg Douma hopes it’s just the beginning of having a strong showing at the event

The students who made the honor choir were Heather Wilharm, Petra Holtze, Julia Gaubert, Sienna Nelson, Mackenzie Donais, Charlotte Krekelser, Grace Arnold, Ethan Elumba, Mara Currens and Kate Fox.

“We never had this many make it. I’m very proud,” said Douma.

Allegro is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing a comprehensive choir experience to young people. This academy started its seventh year this fall. The organization offers programs to children in grades two through eight in Rosemount and Lakeville. The academy has more than 120 students led by six directors.

“We’re a small organization but we’ve grown considerably,” said Douma.

Douma said the academy draws students from all over the South Metro and has never turned a student away. Allegro provides scholarship to students and provides grants to music education programs in the area, including schools.

Allegro raises money through two major concerts each year as well as other projects. The money goes back to the scholarship and grant programs.

“I love the fact that our students get to see how their music is making a positive impact,” said Douma.

Allegro will host their winter concert “Comfort and Joy” at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at Shepherd of the Valley Church. The concert will feature music from across the Atlantic Ocean.
