Seminar meant to kick-start tough talks

Talking with a loved one about aging issues can be difficult.

“That’s why there’s a class,” said Lynn Cibuzar, of DARTS.

The Rosemount United Methodist Church will host a seminar called “Critical Conversations” on how to address aging issues at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at the church.

Cibuzar said the goal of the seminar is to help families talk about issues that may arise as a parent or grandparent gets older. While it may be uncomfortable, Cibuzar said planning is important because it gives seniors the opportunity to let their family members know what their wishes are in different situations.

The seminar focuses on starting dialogue about issues such as driving, health, independence and dying. Cibuzar said she provides ideas to help families communicate better and work together to solve caregiving challenges.

Cibuzar said many times these issues will come up suddenly, but families can be proactive in having ongoing discussions. She said laying the seeds can ensure a better future.

DARTS provides the class on request. Lori Maser from the Rosemount United Methodist Church said as a multigenerational church they have people in their congregation facing these types of issues. And because these issues are not unique to their members they decided to open the seminar to the public.

“This is not a topic unique to us. We thought it would be helpful for people across the community,” said Maser.

Maser said Cibuzar is a good speaker and provides a lot of useful information. The church plans to hold another seminar after the New Year.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
