The ninth-ranked Rosemount girls swimming and diving team improved one spot – both from their ranking and their finish last year – at Saturday’s Class 2A True Team State Meet.
Ninth a year ago in their first trip to the meet, the Irish placed eighth with 1,131 1/2 points in action at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. No. 1-ranked Minnetonka defeated No. 2 Wayzata 2,203-2,100 1/2 for the True Team state title.
“We didn’t rest for the meet; we went about business as usual (with our training). Considering that, they did very good,” Rosemount coach Tami Carlson said. “It was a great opportunity for girls to swim at the University of Minnesota that may never get that opportunity. I had one girl start crying because she was so excited when she saw the venue.”
The Aquatics Center was a familiar site for returning four-event state qualifier Megan Wenman. The freshman looked to be far from nervous as she placed in the top four in three events. She opened the meet by placing fourth in the 200 freestyle and breaking her own school record with a time of 1 minute, 54.34 seconds. Wenman went on to place third in the 100 freestyle before joining Madeline Ryan, Olivia Johnston and Grace Herron for a fourth-place swim in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Irish’s only other top-10 finish came in the 1-meter dive where junior Sawyer Murray emerged to place fourth with a score of 365.65 points.
The team had five other top-15 finishes, including 12th-place efforts by Claire Judeh in the 1-meter dive and the foursome of Herron, Katie Garrity, Claire Tolan and Wenman in the 400 freestyle relay. Garrity added a 13th-place swim in the 500 freestyle and a 15th-place showing in the 200 individual medley and Herron was 14th in the 50 freestyle.
The Irish tried to close out an unbeaten run through the South Suburban Conference season Tuesday when they traveled to Lakeville South. The Section 3AA Championships are coming up Nov. 7-9 at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake.
