There was no upset of top-seeded Prior Lake in the cards this time around.
After advancing to the state tournament with a 4-3 win over the Lakers in last year’s section finals, the Rosemount girls tennis team was handed a 7-0 sweep by the South Suburban Conference champions in last Thursday’s showdown at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.
“They definitely were the stronger team, especially indoors,” Rosemount coach Dana Beck said. “We were very happy to make it to the finals and I am proud of the girls for their awesome season. They went in to the final match with the never-give-up attitude and played hard until the end.”
The Irish advanced to the finals by sweeping all three doubles matches in three sets in a 4-3 win over Eastview last Tuesday.
The three-hour match came down to No. 3 doubles, where Rachel Olson and Gretchen McDonald overcame a 3-4 deficit and a 15-40 score to win the decisive third set, 6-4.
The tandems of Monica McDonald and Abby Kohagen and Emily Harrington and Rachel Hoffmann also won doubles matches for the Irish. Ally Baker broke up Eastview’s doubles sweep with a victory at No. 2 singles.
The Irish began the Section 3AA individual tournament Friday and had three entrants advance before being knocked out in the semifinals on Monday. Virginia Norder entered as a No. 2 seed, but won just one match before being upset by a seventh-seeded Prior Lake player in the semifinals.
Baker won two matches before falling to a top-seeded player from Eagan and McDonals and Kohagen advanced with a pair of wins before being knocked out in the doubles quarterfinals.
