Two teams heading in opposite directions crossed paths Friday night at Irish Stadium.
Bloomington Jefferson entered riding a 14-game losing streak dating back to last season and the host Irish — coming off back-to-back South Suburban Conference road wins — were looking to win their third in a row. Both streaks continued as the Irish scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the first two quarters and built a 33-point lead in a 33-7 victory.
Three rushers topped 50 yards as the Irish chewed up a season-high 239 yards on the ground. Dimitri Williams carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns, the first a 1-yard run that made it 14-0 late in the first quarter and the second a two-yard jaunt early in the second.
Grant Jackson added 58 yards, over half of which came on a 31-yard touchdown run that made it 33-0 late in the third quarter, and Trent Woodcock tacked on 58 yards of his own on eight carries.
When the Irish did need to go to the air, quarterback Jackson Erdmann had some success. In his second game as the team’s starter, he completed 6 of 11 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to former quarterback Sean Kalinowski. Kalinowski hauled in a 27-yard strike to cap off the first drive of the game with a score and later grabbed a 13-yard touchdown in the final minutes of the second quarter.
Gabe Ehlers added two catches for 42 yards and Jordan Herbranson snagged one for 33 yards.
The efficient Irish ended up with a seven-minute edge in time of possession, had 19 first downs to Jefferson’s nine and converted on 7 of 11 third downs while piling up 361 yards of offense.
The Rosemount defense held Jefferson to 1 of 10 on third downs and forced the Jaguars to punt five times and turn the ball over on downs three times.
The regular season came to a close Wednesday night with a road trip to take on eighth-ranked (Class 6A) Lakeville North. The section tournament begins Tuesday night.
