Irish soccer team is young, but tough

Even top-ranked girls’ soccer teams can get beat if the team’s mind is on another match. Rosemount girls’ soccer team learned that Tuesday, Oct. 6 against Robbinsdale Armstrong in a 3-1 loss.

The match they were waiting for is yearly rival Edina Thursday, Oct. 8. The game ended up a draw, 0-0 in overtime. So the Irish record sits at 11-1-1.

In the Robbinsdale Armstrong game, the Irish scored its only point in the third period with a sister combination. With an assist by freshman Julie Kasten, her senior sister Jeanne scored to tie the match.

But as coach Warren Hartzberg said, the Robbinsdale team kept fighting for a win....

But the season record is a winning one, 11-1-1.

Included in the season wins are a 2-1 victory over Apple Valley and a 3-1 win over Burnsville. Burnsville faced off with Apple Valley shutting the Eagles out 2-0.

A winning team has a goal tender that is effective.

For the Irish, it is freshman Christine Kennedy who has only allowed seven soccer balls to pierce into the net. Four of the games, she has sealed off the net to the opposing team.

The triangle of force comes from the tri-captains Nicole Johnson, Calleen Neary and Jeanne Kasten. Johnson leads the scoring for the team with 24 goals....

Another key player for the team is outside midfield defensive player Kristen Nokelby, an eighth grader who is part of the gifted athlete program.

Success in theatre is goal of Valley Park youth

Radio public service announcements ... acting classes, magic shows, theater productions. These certainly don’t sound like the activities of a typical 12-year-old, but for Allen Manning, a seventh grader at Scott Highlands Middle School, Rosemount, it’s all part of a day’s work.

Manning has been a serious actor since he was five years old. Now, with several major plays under his belt, (two with the Children’s Theatre of Minneapolis), he has high hopes for his future and a career in acting....

Manning began performing magic shows for schools and the community before he could read. His parents, Mike and Juanita Manning, in an effort to provide a creative outlet for their son, enrolled him in an acting class in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1983. According to Manning, “that’s how it all started.” He soon became a staple with the Act 2 Community Theatre in Aberdeen and achieved notoriety as the “play kid” at school.

Upon his family’s relocation to Rosemount two years ago, Manning became equally as involved with his dramatic activities here.

Currently, he is at work on his second performance with the Children’s Theatre of Minneapolis as Henny, a Dutch doll, in the production of “Raggedy Ann and Andy,” which runs through Nov. 7. Simultaneously, he is a member of the cast of Scott Highland’s fall play, “The Competition,” in which he portrays Marvin, a “first-class nerd,” in his words.

Break ground for new church on Oct. 14

Sunday, Oct. 14, will be the date for the ground breaking services for the new Rosemount Methodist Church.

The new church will be located on a five-acre tract of land adjoining the present parsonage on the east side of Park Avenue South of Maple Street in Rosemount.

Rev. R.B. Shoemaker, pastor, stated that the completion of the church is expected in approximately 120 working days with construction to begin in early November. Completion of the building is anticipated to be in June of 1963 with use and occupancy to take place after landscaping and furnishing in September.

Student Council is named at Rosemount H.S.

Rosemount’s homecoming this weekend

A Thursday night coronation will usher in Rosemount high school’s homecoming festivities this week with five senior girls competing for the title of queen.

Either Linda Martin, Vivian Paulseth, Stephanie Ruona, Mariellen Smith or Sandy Vorqerk will resign as “her majesty” throughout the football game Friday afternoon and the dance Friday evening.

The coronation will be held in the high school gymnasium beginning at 8 p.m. The parade at 2:30 the following day, foreruns the game, a gridiron battle against Simley, scheduled for a 3:15 kickoff.

As a finale, the homecoming dance, with a harvest moon theme, will commence at 8 p.m. A dollar admission will be charged. The “Men of Note,” a University band, will feature Susan Ruona as their vocalist.

A special invitation is extended to all alumni, the public is also cordially invited to attend.

Remember the annual supper and bazaar at the St. John’s English Lutheran Church of Lakeville next Thursday afternoon and evening, Oct. 21.

Father Moran of Farmington called on Father Carey Monday afternoon.

Madeline Barger and Miss Katie Brazil attended the wedding of the latter’s niece, Oma Brazil of Green Isle, on Thursday.

Lorraine Schult spent Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul.

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. McFadden and Mrs. Benny Moeller and daughter Joan attended the first mass of Rev. Leo White at the Basilica in Minneapolis on last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Moeller and Billie were supper guests at the Gust Polenske home Thursday.

A surprise dinner was served on Tuesday evening in honor of Helen Warweg at Hazel Harmer’s apartment. After a delicious chicken dinner, the guests attended the theatre in Farmington. Those present were: Helen Warweg, Wm. Johnson, Hazel Harmer, Warren Pietsch, Lorraine Hansen, Eugene Lundgren, Lorraine Schult, Al Thompson, Eleanor and Marion McDonough and Eddie Warweg.
