The sixth-ranked (Class 2A) Rosemount girls swimming and diving team moved one step closer to an undefeated run through the South Suburban Conference with a 96-78 dual win over Burnsville last Thursday at the Rosemount Middle School pool.
A year after finishing 8-1 and sharing the title with Lakeville North and Prior Lake, the Irish are 6-0 with dual meets remaining against Bloomington Jefferson, Eastview and Lakeville South.
Burnsville took the early lead with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay Thursday, but it was all Irish after that. Claire Tolan won the 200 freestyle and Katie Garrity and Olvia Johnston followed with a 2-3 finish in the 200 individual medley to tie the score at 23-23.
Megan Wenman followed with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle and Kristina Terhaar won uncontested in the 1-meter dive to stretch the Irish lead to 39-29.
Wenman added another first-place individual finish in the 100 freestyle and joined Garrity, Madeline Ryan and Grace Herron for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay. The Irish placed 1-2 in the relay to pull in front, 79-51.
Other runner-up finishes were turned in by the 200 medley relay team of Wenman, Johnston, Garrity and Herron, Garrity in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, Abby Tesch in the 100 butterfly and Tolan in the 500 freestyle.
Johnston nabbed the team’s sixth first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke where she out-touched second place by 14-hundredths of a second.
The Irish are back in action this weekend when they host Cretin-Derham Hall, Eagan, Henry Sibley, Park, St. Paul Highland Park, Woodbury and East Ridge for the True Team section meet.
