Dan McCarty has always loved reading and from that an interest in creative writing grew. As a full time police officer and U.S. Army veteran he also has a background that lends itself to some exciting stories.

McCarty, who grew up in Rosemount, drew on his experiences as a cop and soldier and used them to write his thriller novel, “A Soldier Reborn.” According to his website the book is filled with realistic action and takes readers on an exciting journey filled with suspense.

“It’s not a difficult read. I tried not to make it too Hollywood, but I think it’s done in an interesting way,” said McCarty.

The book came out through Beaver’s Pond Press in November 2011 and McCarty said people seem to like it. McCarty, a father of three, said he wrote the first book an hour at a time after his family had gone to sleep.

When he wrote “A Soldier Reborn,” McCarty had a longer story mapped out in his head and so the book will be the first in a trilogy. He is actively writing the second book but the birth of his third son this summer has slowed things down a bit.

McCarty will talk about his book at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Robert Trail Library as part of the Rosemount Area Arts Council Meet the Author series.

McCarty said he’s excited to present in his hometown.

Background

McCarty was raised in Rosemount and attended several Rosemount schools. He graduated from Eastview High School in 1999. After graduating he enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard.

After Sept. 11, 2001 he served eight months security mission at Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport. In 2003 he deployed to Kosovo.

In 2005, McCarty graduated from Minnesota State University-Mankato with a bachelor’s in law enforcement. He currently works for the Eagan Police Department.
