Koch odor spill comes as ‘nose’ surprise

An employee error at Koch Refinery in Rosemount Sept. 15 caused what officials are calling a “non-toxic odor spill.”

Several residents became nauseous and ill from the odor, which hung in the air over Eagan for several hours Tuesday night, according to Patrick Geagan, administrative captain for the Eagan Police Department.

After several hours of investigation, Koch Refinery was identified as the source of the odor spill. Geagan said Koch initially denied several times that they were the source, until they discovered an employee error about 9:45 p.m....

Their initial denial prompted Geagan to contact the Dakota County Health Department, the Dakota County Civil Defense Director, and the Pollution Control Agency (PCA) to investigate the matter....

Parr explained that an employee shut down equipment for a routine cleaning process, but failed to go through the normal shutdown and notifications procedures. Sour water, which is normally oxidized with hydrogen peroxide, escaped into the treatment plant, emitting a putrid odor....

Koch’s hesitation has prompted the PCA to ask the refinery to make changes in its existing emergency alert plain.

Rosemount man escapes death in fatal accident

Samual S. Sigelman, 55, a motor parts salesman from Watertown, South Dakota, met death in a two car accident about 11 p.m. near McKees, Highways 55 and 49, Thursday night of this week.

Sigelman was a passenger in a southbound ’62 Cornet driven and owned by Mrs. Mary Jan Mooney, 43. She was taken to Ancker hospital where she refused to give the highway patrol a blood alcohol test. She was released the next day after treatment.

The Mooney car was southbound on Highway 49, when it collided with a ’51 Ford driven by Maynard W. Harrington, 36, of Rt. 2, Box 308, Rosemount, headed for work in the Twin Cities.

Harrington told police Mrs. Mooney’s car did not stop for the stop sign, as Highway 49 crossed the northbound lane of Highway 55.

Harrington escaped with minor injuries, but was hospitalized at Ancker for a short time....

Rosemount favors new phone service

Bob Toombs, acting for the Rosemount Businessmen’s Assn., makes a final official report as to the wishes of the Rosemount area residents in connection with extended telephone service.

Out of 884 votes, 507 were in favor of the extended service and 157 against, which means 76.3 percent in favor of the project. This includes Rosemount extended service and part of Orchard Gardens.

The Rosemount area is now served by the Central Telephone Co., of Farmington and they made the following statement (in brief) to the Rosemount telephone subscribers....

Extended area service calling (no toll charge) will be established between Rosemount and the St. Paul primary and southeast areas, central exchanges include Capital 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7, Humboldt 8 and 9, Midway 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9, Prospect 1, 4, and 6, and Glenview 1, 4, 5, and 9.

Extended service will be established between Rosemount and Orchard Gardens.

Methodists at Rosemount to view new plans

Richard Cederberg, chairman of the building committee, has announced that the preliminary plans for a new Methodist church at Rosemount have been prepared and will be available for viewing on October 3.

Members of the congregation will be asked to approve the plans at the 8 p.m. special quarterly conference so that the committee can proceed with the final plans and the ground-breaking ceremony.

Reese weather strip firm at Rosemount

The Reese Metal Weather Strip Co., a new manufacturing concern, is now operating on the University of Minnesota property, east of Rosemount in a large building in the same area, where once the Schjeldahl Co. of Northfield operated....

The Reese Company employs about 20 persons at Rosemount, seven are from the Rosemount area; others are from Minneapolis, who have moved to Rosemount.

President Ellingson said his company expects to expand and become a real asset to this community.

School heads meet Friday

A special school election will be held at Castle Rock, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. in the school, to determine whether the Castle Rock High School will be placed in the Farmington or Northfield area, according to three notices placed in that village ten days before the election....

Other business finished at the meeting of the superintendents was: that District 15 and 16 would to go Bloomington rather than Lakeville and Rosemount; that District 4 go to Rosemount rather than Mendota; that Districts 64 and 58 would go to Hastings rather than Hastings and Cannon Falls.

Those present at the meeting were Superintendents Karpen of Hastings, Miller of Hastings, Wall of Farmington, Hooker of Lakeville, O’Brien of Rosemount, Kipp of Randolph, Smiley of South St. Paul, Garlough of West St. Paul, Wichman of Northfield, Kuehn of Bloomington, Engelbart of Cannon Falls.

Drilling machinery has been assembled on the A.J. Strese farm and work has begun on Tuesday in putting down a prospective hole for oil. The company is known as the Northern Development Co., and is backed by Minnesota and Texas capitalists. The drilling will be in charge of Carl Ewing and W.S. Callindelle.

Pears may by successfully grown in Minnesota. Roger Casey has one tree that is filled with a good quality of the fruit.

Bill Hickey informs the writer that after visiting twelve states this summer he is thoroughly convinced that Minnesota has all others beat. And Bill knows what he is talking about.

L.O. Bernier attended the pre-showing of Buicks at the St. Paul auditorium Wednesday.

Miss Jeanne Bernier commenced her studies at St. Terasa’s College at Winona Monday. Due to her high school rating of 96 percent she was offered a four year scholarship at that college.

Miss Dorothy Zimmerman has accepted a stenographic position at one of the wholesale houses in St. Paul.
