Arc support group will start meeting Sept. 11

Parents of children with disabilities can find support and exchange ideas monthly

Every month at Rosemount United Methodist Church a group meets to share the challenges and joys of raising children with disabilities. Its facilitator, Gail Hoffmann, said the Arc-sponsored support group offers a friendly atmosphere to exchange ideas and find support.

“I know there’s a need,” said Hoffmann of what the group provides.

Hoffmann said she has had trouble finding people to attend the monthly meetings but hopes people will to come out. The group offers a chance for parents to get out of the house and to meet others who are facing similar experiences.

“The group is meant to uplift families,” said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann said the group is for parents of children with any intellectual or developmental disability. If they get enough people out, Hoffmann said they will try to get speakers to talk about issues relevant to parents of children with disabilities.

The group meets the second Tuesday of the month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the choir room at Rosemount UMC. Their first meeting of this school year will be Sept. 11. Childcare is available.

Additional meeting dates are Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.  Meeting dates for 2013 are Jan. 8, Feb. 12, Mar. 12, Apr. 9 and May 14.

The Arc Greater Twin Cities’ networking groups are free, but participants should register in advance. Arc offers 14 additional networking groups and five additional sibling workshops throughout the Twin Cities.  All groups are open to families in Arc’s seven-county service area. For more information on all that Arc offers call 952- 920-0855 or visit www.arcgreatertwincities.org.
