When Tom Stene started working for Polar Service Center in Inver Grove Heights they were located in a four bay shop the company leased from Flint Hills Resources. In the four years since Stene started, the service center has grown its business considerably and that tiny little shop no longer fits their needs.
“It was dirty and dark and small,” said Stene.
Polar is ASME National Board R-stamp certified and provides sales, parts, repairs, inspections and other services for all makes of tank bodies and trailers. The small shop limited the company and it lost business because of it.
“Polar was missing work, right in their own area,” said Stene.
In October 2011 Polar, which has its headquarters in St. Cloud, started construction on a new location six miles south at 16724 Clayton Ave. in Rosemount. The new facility has eight service bays, 3,800 sq. ft. for parts inventory and parking for 75 trailers. The company moved to the new location in June.
Company representative Stephen Petit said the new facility is strategically placed to provide and service tankers from throughout the greater metro area. The facility builds and repairs tank trailers for dry and liquid bulk cargoes including oil and fuel, food products, asphalt, chemicals and corrosives.
While the new facility is much nicer, Stene said making the move was a challenge.
“Moving everything over wasn’t easy but we are back on track now,” said Stene.
One of the biggest impacts of the new location is having a large area for parts. In the previous location the parts area was small and they couldn’t keep much inventory.
“Now we can carry almost everything and anything customers would need for a trailer,” said Nonie Hoewisch, the assistant parts manager.
Hoewisch has been with Polar for nearly five years and said the new facility is a welcome improvement. She said it’s better for business and a nicer place to go to work.
“We have expanded all areas of the business and are willing to stock what customers want and need,” said Hoewisch.
At the Rosemount location Polar employs 22 including 12 technicians, six in parts and two administrative personnel.
Polar Service Centers is the only national network of factory-owned parts and service locations for all makes of tank trailers and bodies. The company has 30 locations across the United States.
Polar Service Centers is a division of Polar Corporation, North America’s largest manufacturer of aluminum, stainless steel, and carbon steel tank trailers.
