City council race narrowed down to four

Rosemount voters slimmed down the city council race to four. The four highest vote getters in today's election were incumbent Jeff Weisensel, Vanessa Demuth, Joe Kurle and Joe Zanmiller.

Those four will go onto compete for two open city council seats in November.

Unofficial results of the primary on Dakota County's website show Weisensel leading the pack with 607 votes, Demuth following with 557, Kurle at 285, and Zanmiller, 284. At the bottom were Wade Miller with 194 and Maila Ellefson, 152.

Weisensel was the only incumbent on the ballot. The other council seat up for election is currently held by Matt Kearney, who decided not to run for a full term. Kearney was appointed to the council after Kurt Bills was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives two years ago.

The city council will canvas the election results during a special meeting Aug. 16.

City clerk Amy Domeier said it was a pretty quiet day at the city's seven polling places. She expects a much larger voter turnout in November.

In other relevant races Republican Kurt Bills will face incumbent Democrat Amy Klobuchar for the U.S. Senate seat in November. Bills, who lives in Rosemount, beat out fellow Republicans David Carlson and Bob Carney Jr for a place on the General Election ballot.

Democrat Greg Clausen will face Republican Pat Hall in November for the Minnesota State Senate District 57 seat. Clausen beat Mike Germain.

In the US House of Representative District 2 race, Republican incumbent John Kline easily beat David Gerson. He will go against DFL candidate Mike Obermueller.
