A photograph can keep a moment from slipping into the forgotten, and residents can help ensure some of Rosemount’s moments don’t slip away by submitting pictures in the city’s 2012 photo contest.

The deadline for the 2012 photo contest, sponsored by the Rosemount Area Arts Council and Rosemount Parks and Recreation, is July 12.

Contest chair Heidi Gustafson-Green said they have already received a few submissions but they are hoping for a whole lot more.

The contest is open to any Rosemount resident who wants to submit a photograph. Contest categories include Nature-landscape, wildlife, floral; Lifestyle-people, activities, city scenes; Significant Software Enhancement; Youth 17 and under and “Give Us Your Best Shot”.

Photographs should consist of something in Rosemount. The exception to that rule is the new Give Us Your Best Shot, which will feature photographers’ best photos wherever they were taken.

This year, Gustafson-Green said organizers dropped a professional category in hopes of making the contest less intimidating and to draw more residents.

“We want people to enjoy and there are enough professional shows out there,” said Gustafson-Green.

Gustafson-Green hopes the contest will get more entries in the 17 and under category. Last year they received only seven submissions from youth.

“You never know what you’re going to get,” said Gustafson-Green.

This year’s contest will have a similar format to last year. All photos entered will be shown during Leprechaun Days at the Steeple Center. The official public viewing and People’s Choice voting will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. July 26. Dakota County Technical College photography instructor Darrell Tangen will judge the contest. While People’s Choice votes are being tabulated Tangen will offer critiques on the entered photos.

Gustafson-Green said they will present all the winners at the end of the show. Awards will be given to first, second, third and honorable mention in each category.

The Steeple Center will open again for public display after the Leprechaun Days parade from noon to 4 p.m. July 28.

Participants should submit a high quality 8 x 10 photo mounted on foam board along with a digital submission of a jpeg or pdf of the photo on a flash drive or CD. Each participant can enter up to three photos. There is no entry fee for the contest.

Photos should be dropped off at the Rosemount Parks and Recreation office in the Rosemount Community Center, 13885 S. Robert Tr. The office is on the lower level and is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The contest deadline is 4:30 p.m. July 12.
