Retiree recognized

Another Rosemount High School veteran has decided to retire. Art Smith received a plaque and recognition at the District 196 Board of Education meeting May 26, from board member Beverly Albee. He taught instrumental music at the school for 22 years. Other Rosemount High School retirees who announced their retirement earlier were also recognized. They include Harold Burkard and Ed Gass.

’Disappointing’ bids received for stadium

Approval of bids for the District 196 stadium project that was to take place at the June 8 board of education meeting was delayed due to apparent lack of interest in the project.

“We’re very disappointed at the interest in the project,” said Ted Rozeboom, representing the architectural firm….

Rozeboom said he would have been happy to receive four bids as expected, but when the bids were opened at 2 p.m. Monday, June 8, two of the companies had no bids, one bid was “not serious” because it was so high and even the fourth bid was much more than the project was expected to cost.

The stadium renovation was part of the approved bond issue this spring and scheduled to cost $537,500….

The lowest bid that came in for the project was $713,300 from D.H. Blattner & Sons, St. Paul.

Rozeboom said the bids show a general lack of interest from sub-contractors.

Dr. Paul Gavin U of M graduate

Dr. Paul Francis Gavin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gavin of Marian Terrace, Rosemount was graduated from the University of Minnesota June 9, with the degrees of B.S. and B.A. He is a member of the professional dental fraternity.

On May 24, he received an award from the American Academy of Roentgenology. He graduated from St. John’s University. He has been appointed an officer in the United State Army and expects an overseas assignment....

N.N. gas co. to erect plant at Rosemount

Ordinance No. 58 of the Village of Rosemount grants the Northern Natural Gas Co., operating as People’s Natural Gas Division, a non exclusive authority to erect a gas plant, with all necessary mains and pipes in and over its streets and alleys. This is for the purpose of distributing natural gas to the village of Rosemount and is for a period of 25 years.

The ordinance, printed elsewhere this week, prescribes the terms and conditions under which the gas company is to operate and repeals Ordinance No. 34 of the Village of Rosemount.

The ordinance is in 12 sections and was passed, adopted and approved June 5, 1962.

Hobby featured at open house

Mrs. Carol Newman of Rosemount, who maintains a ceramic hobby as a side-line, held open house Friday afternoon and evening, May 25, at her home, 221 W. Maple St., Rosemount.

A decorative setting showed the various techniques used by the students in their colorful and beautiful ceramic handiwork.

Displaying items were Mrs. Fred Uitdenbogerd, Mrs. Leo Fleugel, Mrs. Carl Rechtzigel, Mrs. Paul Jones, Mrs. Milton, Wutschke, Mrs. Herman Newman, Mrs. Charles Newman.

On display were two entries which won special recognition awards at the Arts and Ceramic League of Minnesota annual show in Minneapolis in April.

A demonstration in wheel decorating and tranz was given at the evening session by “Bud” Jensen of Lee-Zure Ceramic Studio in Minneapolis.

D. Soderholm heads Legion at Rosemount

New officers installed at the Rosemount Legion Post No. 65, June 5, are the following: Commander, Donald Soderholm; First Vice Commander, Marvin Ratzlaff; Second Vice Commander, Gil Howe; Adjutant, Donald Duea; Finance Officer, Frank McDonough; Chaplain, Wally Gjehlaug; Sergeant of the Arms, Lloyd Sieckert.

The meeting was held in the Legion club rooms at Rosemount.

Phone firm may expand Rosemount unit

The Central Telephone Company has made application for rezoning a portion of land located behind Joe Quigley’s home in Rosemount, from residential to commercial, according to a notice in this issue.

The land will be used to build a new telephone building to facilitate the equipment needed for a dialing system, providing a survey among subscribers for this type of service proves favorable.

Vern Youll, telephone company group manager, stated that the building, if built, will be on the same order as the one recently and will be designed with provisions for expansion into a commercial office, if and when the need arises.

Deputy sherriff has 2nd attack

A second heart attack Friday morning has left Ray Tousignant of Rosemount somewhat weaker and making his rally for recovery slower.

This is the report received from Mrs. Tousignant at the bedside of her husband in Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis, Monday. The first occurred the night of June 5.

Tousignant, 40, is a deputy sheriff in Dakota County and has five children. The eldest, Donna cares for the other four while her mother spends from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the hospital daily.

Weather man smiles on big county picnic

A total of 400 autos carried county farmers, businessmen and others to the big Dakota County picnic at Antlers Park, Tuesday afternoon and evening. It was a tailor-made day, the mercury lingering around the 80 mark.

Athletic contests and speeches featured a day filled with a good time for young and old. Awarding of various prizes elicited much surprise and laughter....

Feature and attendance prizes were given by the following merchants: Rosemount – Zimmerman General Store, Ryan & Corcoran, J. F. Geraghty & Co., Thune Drug Co., Shamrock Bar, Rosemount Oil Co., Hagemesiter Meat Market, Al’s Café, Bernier Motor Co., H.J. Mongan, Albin Nelson.

Rosemount goes to state

The Rosemount 4-H band and chorus went to University Farm, Monday, to take part in the state music contest held at 4-H Club Week. This is the annual gathering of 4-H club members from the state for demonstrations, classes, tours and contests. Dakota County members who attended were Phyllis Vanderschaegen, Elsie Bohn, and Dean Harris. Dean is the secretary of the state 4-H Club Federation. Phyllis represented the county in the “Better Groming” contest.

Esther Borg, Merryville 4-H Club leader, sang “Trees” at the tree planting ceremony held on the campus, Tuesday night. At this ceremony one delegate from each county deposited a sample of soil from his or her county at the roots of the tree. In this way, the whole state was represented in the ceremony.

Mike Fitzpatrick, highway patrolman, has moved from Farmington to Rosemount and will occupy the Heinen property.

Two nuns from St. Joseph Order of St. Paul are conducing a religious class at St. Joseph’s church.

Jim Doyle, Jr., is having the residence property on his corner repaired and remodeled and put in readiness for occupancy.

Jim Doyle had his 1902 one-cyliner Brush auto in the Legion parade in South St. Paul, Sunday.

Improve the roads list

There is a whole lot being done on the public roads throughout this part of the county.

Different localities have different ways of handling the work, but we believe Rosemount has hit upon the best method for keeping up their roads.

In February the citizens of that locality held a meeting and talked over the matter of making and maintaining better roads. There was not much done until recently when Frank Hardy led out by offering to raise $100 toward the good roads fund and Rosemount village followed with $100 more and the township with another $100, and they decided to handle the road work partly by patrol.

M.J. Martin has been put in charge of the west half of the township, or all roads west of and including the Cannon Falls road. It will be Mrs. Martin’s duty to patrol the roads frequently and remove loose stones, fill ruts, etc., and is now at work on the Farmington-Rosemount road.

We notice J.B. Farrell has the grader on a mile stretch on the Dodd Road just west of the village and indications are that Rosemount is doing her share in road improvement.
