Rosemount’s season-long struggle to score runs continued in the opening round of the Section 3AAA tournament.
The Irish had nine hits, but still ended up being shut out for the fourth time this season in an 8-0 season-ending loss to sixth-seeded St. Thomas Academy Friday night in Mendota Heights.
St. Thomas Academy (13-9) took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Rosemount starter Jake Schulze. The Cadets doubled their lead to 4-0 with a two-run home run in the third, and then did it again an inning later with a grand slam that made it 8-0. That was the end of the day for Schulze, who allowed all eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Reliever Jordan Tumilson scattered three hits while holding St. Thomas Academy scoreless over the final 2 1/3 innings.
The Irish stranded 10 baserunners in the loss. Anthony Winters, Nick Seipel, Joe Waite and Joe Turner each had two hits and Isaiah Lufkin added one.
Rosemount finished the season with a record of 5-16. Twelve seniors played in their final game for the Irish: Lufkin, Tumilson, Waite, Chris Leske, Nate LeMoine, Matt Nelson, Mitch Olson, Tommy Wiita, Morris Valenzuela, Connor Wolf, Andrew Schwartz and Kyle Breitinger.
