The Robert Trail Library is looking for teen volunteers — or Volunteens — to help with their summer reading program.

Teen librarian Linda Armstrong said the big task for Volunteens will be to register children and teens for library’s annual summer reading program. The reading program kicks off June 11.

Volunteers will also make lunch bags and placemats for the Meals on Wheels program. Teens, ages 12 to 18, can volunteer with the program.

It’s a big job. Last year more than 1,100 children participated in the program. Armstrong said the first couple weeks are really busy. To help people register the volunteers need to know about the summer reading program and about the library’s services.

Armstrong said there will be two training sessions on June 2. Volunteers are required to attend one of two sessions. The first will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the second from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

Armstrong said she asks teens volunteer at least two and a half hours a week. Volunteers can donate more time, though. In the past Armstrong said they’ve had some really dedicated teenagers take part in the program.

For teens looking to gain some experience, Armstrong said this is a good experience, especially for those who like to work with children.

To register, teens can fill out a form at the library or online at co.dakota.mn.us. The program lasts about five weeks said teen librarian Linda Armstrong.

“It’s worthwhile and fun,” said Armstrong.
