Sherrill Backes loves sewing and interior design. As owner of Sherrill’s Interiors she combines her two loves to create custom-made housewares including window treatments, furniture, accents and more.
“Combing the two was a way to do what I love,” said Backes.
Sewing is a skill that has served her well. And despite the recession Backes has been able to keep her business going for more than 10 years. Located in downtown Rosemount, Backes provides in-home consulting and custom-made projects for her clients.
Backes has an Applied Associates Degree in Interior Design from Dakota County Technical College. She started at DCTC after her youngest child began kindergarten.
After graduating from DCTC, Backes worked in a window treatment workroom for three years. That experience taught her everything she needed to know about creating custom hard and soft window treatments. Hard treatments are blinds and soft treatments include valances, curtains, draperies and cornices.
Backes started Sherrill’s Interiors in 2002. She loves being an entrepreneur and being able to work on her own schedule. As a small-business owner Backes said word of mouth has been integral in promoting her business. She also is a member of the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
In her shop sit a couple of old industrial sewing machines, and while they don’t look fancy Backes said they get the job done. She has spent hours on the machines creating one-of-a-kind items for her customers. In addition to window treatments Backes sews bedding, pillows and basic clothing alterations.
“They are old but reliable,” said Backes of her machines.
When starting a project Backes listens to her customers and tries to figure out their style.
“It’s not about me. It’s about them,” said Backes.
Backes has moved her business several times but has always been in downtown Rosemount.
“I really like it here and it’s a place to go to work,” said Backes.
