The Rosemount softball team continued to struggle at the plate as it closed out the regular season with two losses in its final three games.
The Irish scored four runs and had 13 hits over the course of those three games and didn’t score more than three runs in any of their final six games as they finished with a record of 6-10.
The team had plenty of base runners in Monday afternoon’s finale against Lakeville North at The Cove, but eight were left stranded in a 9-1 loss to the South Suburban Conference co-champions.
The Panthers set the tone with five runs in the top of the first and three more in the second against Rosemount starter Nicole Johnson. Melissa Seldon took over in the fourth and surrendered one run over the final four innings.
It was 9-0 by the time the Irish broke up the shutout by scoring on a throwing error in a double steal in the bottom of the fifth.
Kia Henk supplied two of the team’s six hits.
The Irish broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning Friday at Elk River and snapped their four-game losing skid with a 3-2 victory.
Johnson started the decisive inning with a single, her second hit of the contest. A fielder’s choice and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Henk, who drove home Johnson with a single for the game’s first run. Anna Hinderaker followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0.
Seldon picked up the win, allowing five hits while striking out four. Gabby Sprang came on in relief and picked up the save. Elk River ended up leaving nine runners on base.
The Irish had just two hits and left eight runners of their own on bases in last Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to third-ranked Bloomington Jefferson. The Jaguars scored two runs in the third and one more in the fourth as they improved to 15-1.
Johnson started for Rosemount and allowed three runs on six hits in four innings.
