A three-run bottom of the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and sparked the Rosemount softball team to its third straight win, 7-5, over Eagan Monday night at The Cove.
After Eagan plated two runs in the top of the inning, Kia Henk started the bottom of the frame with a single. She scored what turned out to be the winning run on a double by Melissa Seldon. A passed ball brought in another run and Grace Longman capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Gabby Sprang came on in relief of starter Nichole Johnson in the top of the sixth and allowed one run over the final two innings to pick up the save.
Johnson and Madi Van Sickle each recorded three of Rosemount’s nine hits. Johnson singled and scored the game’s first run on a Henk sacrifice fly in the first inning and singled home Van Sickle after she tripled in the second.
Johnson added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Anna Hinderaker added an RBI single.
The Irish plated eight runs in the first three innings and took advantage of five Mahtomedi errors in a 9-2 victory Saturday in the opening round of the Tartan Tournament.
The rest of the tournament was rained out.
Hinderacker and Henk each ripped three of the team’s 12 hits. Johnson added two hits and three RBI, Sarah Jacobs had two hits and a run scored and Meghan Schuster knocked in two runs.
Seldon went the distance on the mound, striking out nine and walking two.
Jacobs’ three-run home run sparked the Irish to their first win over Lakeville South in two years, 4-3 last Thursday in Lakeville.
South led 2-0 when Jacobs went deep in the top of the third. The Cougars tied the game at 3-3 before the Irish plated the game-winning run in the top of the fifth.
The final run gave the win to Johnson, who allowed three runs in four innings. Sprang put up zeroes over the final three innings to get the save.
Johnson and Esselman each collected two of the team’s eight hits.
The Irish (5-7) traveled to Prior Lake Wednesday night and are back on the road against Eastview in Apple Valley this afternoon.
